Four RCTs involving 439 patients were included. There were no significant differences in pain scores (as measured by visual analogue scale) between topical and oral metronidazole on days 1, 3, and 7 postoperatively. Significant heterogeneity was found across studies, especially at 7 days.
Comment: Metronidazole in either oral or topical form seem helpful after a painful surgery Topical and oral forms of Metronidazole have similar effects post-haemorrhoidectomy
