Collaborative research has attracted a lot of attention on social media lately. On April 2nd, Kenneth McLean @kennethmclean92 congratulated @EuroSurg on the publication in @BJSurgery of a collaborative study on a controversial matter: the use of intraabdominal drains after elective colorectal surgery. @EuroSurg is a highly successful European surgical research network of students and surgeons running multicentre studies. This is our social media review for March 2022. Many interesting things related to the BJS community were shared on social media, but all of them occurred on Twitter. March 2022 started with a “Yes, but” tweet by Derek O’Reilly (@DerekAOReilly) citing Kjetil Soreide’s (@ksoreide) open-access Needle Point on the use of perioperative chemotherapy for resectable colorectal liver metastasis. He was surprised that “post-chemo liver toxicity” wasn’t cited by Soreide as an argument against it. Altmetric on April 17th 2022: 35

“It is the best of times, it is the worst of times, it is the age of wisdom, it is the age of foolishness, it is the epoch of belief, it is the epoch of incredulity, it is the season of Light, it is the season of Darkness”. So, let’s start this February 2022 social media review with the StOP protocol on YouTube. A highly educational video from the open-access article “Effects of structured intraoperative briefings on patient outcomes: multicentre before-and-after” was posted on the BJS YouTube site on February 3rd, 2022. The authors concluded that “Short intraoperative briefings improve patient outcomes and should be performed routinely.”

The omicron wave turned January 2022 into a difficult time for surgeons in Western Europe. A high accumulated incidence, the sharp increase in the number of cases, backlogs and delays, and shortage of operating theatre personnel had a tremendous impact on hospitals and surgical departments. However, twitterers in the surgical Twittersphere were particularly active during January 2022. Dmitri Nepogodiev was involved in many engaging conversations on January 1st. He shared the results of a Twitter poll about peer reviewers’ behaviour. Interestingly, 56% of 140 participants opined that reviewers occasionally asked them to add citations in the manuscript to their own articles. Is this an appropriate behaviour for a reviewer? What do editors think? The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 attracted a lot of attention from surgeons. Aneel Bhangu @anellbhangu, Gabriella Morley @gabriellamorely, and Dmitri Nepogodiev @dnepo addressed important questions related to Omicron during an online meeting held on Jan 18th via zoom.

The surgical community on social media was particularly active during the last month of 2021. Twitter was plagued with interesting tweets because deadlines were approaching, and global collaborations (#CovidSurg, #TUGS, #ICARUS) were seeking more engagement from surgeons in countries all over the world. More importantly, the SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant started to have a huge impact, delaying the delivery of elective surgical care in Western Europe. You can watch the video below: On December 16th, @ASGBI, a BJS Society strategic partner, announced on Twitter that the deadline for the BJS Prize submission was the 20th of December (https://twitter.com/asgbi/status/1471445800567906311). The ASGBI International Surgical Congress will take place in Liverpool between the 3rd and the 5th of May 2022.
