The trial involved 163 patients with low rectal cancer unsuitable for restorative proctectomy, but closed before target accrual. At 30 days postoperatively, there was no significant difference in surgical complication rates between Hartmann’s procedure or abdominoperineal resection (39% vs. 43%, P=0.549).
