This study included 68 patients who required a permanent end colostomy and were randomly allocated prophylactic mesh. After 12 months, rates of stomal hernia on CT imaging were 10 per cent with mesh compared to 37 per cent with no mesh, P<0.01, without increasing the risk of complications.
Comment: This remains controversial, but more evidence of the benefit of prophylactic mesh.
