Seventy patients were randomized, and followed for median of 23.9 months. Patients who underwent laparoscopic resection rectopexy had lower full-thickness prolapse recurrence (8.2 vs. 42.8 per cent, p=0.0012) and reoperation rates (0 vs. 33.3 per cent, p=0.002). The laparoscopic resection rectopexy group also had better quality of life and incontinence scores at 2 years.
Comment: Adds level 1 evidence to a question that is inherently challenging to address through RCT design, though limited by small sample size and early trial termination.
