Some 160 patients undergoing stoma closure after low anterior resection received either standard care or a programme of additional information and nursing support. Although symptom scores were similar between groups, the intervention group reported a higher mean global quality of life at 6 months (79.7 ±8.7 vs. 67.8 ±9.5, P=0.001).
Comment: Patient-centred care boosts quality of life, even when bowel dysfunction persists.
