In a multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 377 patients with obstructing colon cancer, covered stents were compared to uncovered stents. At six months, stent patency was similar in the two groups (81.9 per cent covered vs. 72.7 per cent uncovered, p = 0.104), with no significant differences in quality of life. Complications were more frequent in the covered stent group (26.1 per cent vs. 17.5 per cent), primarily due to increased stent migration.
Comment: Uncovered stents may provide better durability short-term, though evidence is not strong enough to change practice yet.
