Neoadjuvant chemotherapy with CAPOX versus chemoradiation for locally advanced rectal cancer with uninvolved mesorectal fascia (CONVERT): initial results of a Phase III Trial.

In this study that included 589 procedures, neoadjuvant chemotherapy with radiotherapy had similar effect on complete pathological response and downstaging. Radiotherapy increase the risk of needing an ileostomy: 63.6 versus 52.2 per cent, P= 0.008.

Comment: The late outcomes of this trial will reveal whether additional radiotherapy is worthwhile.
