In this study that included 589 procedures, neoadjuvant chemotherapy with radiotherapy had similar effect on complete pathological response and downstaging. Radiotherapy increase the risk of needing an ileostomy: 63.6 versus 52.2 per cent, P= 0.008.
Comment: The late outcomes of this trial will reveal whether additional radiotherapy is worthwhile.
