Forty-one patients were randomized, and at 12 months, bowel function scores were significantly lower in the intervention group. Adherence to daily irrigation was high (75 per cent), and patient satisfaction measures also favored the irrigation group.
Comment: Small feasibility trial, but transanal irrigation significantly improved multiple bowel function outcomes, warranting a definitive randomized trial.
