Dis Colon Rectum 2026; 69: 598-607.
Of 181 included patients, stoma outlet obstruction was significantly lower in the group that received a left-sided ileostomy (9.8 versus 31.1 per cent, P=0.0004), without significant difference in reoperation rates. Left-sided stoma formation was an independent protective factor against stoma outlet obstruction (odds ratio 0.24, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.10 to 0.56, P=0.001).
Comment: A simple technical modification with a plausible anatomical basis and large effect size, though overall clinical impact remains unclear.
