This study compared a fixed dose of heparin, with a variable dose calculated according to coagulation measured during the procedure in 294 elective AAA procedures. The variable dose increased the risk of bleeding complications (absolute difference 9 per cent, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.8 to 20.2 per cent) and death (10.7 versus 2.8 per cent).
Comment: Unexpected result, suggesting activated clotting time target may have been too high.
