A total of 300 patients with squamous oesophageal cancer were randomized. Three year overall survival was 82 percent after thoracoscopic and 70.9 per cent after open oesophagectomy; hazard ratio 0.64, 95 per cent confidence interval 73.8 to 87.8. Perioperative complication rates were similar.
Comment: Thoracoscopic surgery is now standard in Japan.
