In this study that included 458 open abdominal procedures, use of the wound protector significantly reduced the rate of surgical site infection: 10.9 versus 20.5 per cent (relative risk 46.81 per cent, 95 per cent confidence interval 16.64 to 66.06 per cent).
Comment: Justifies the WHO recommendation that wound protectors should be used.
