Some 205 patients were assessed for clinical and radiological recurrence at 1 year. Recurrence at 1 year was similar in the ventral patch repair and barbed suture repair groups (1.9 per cent vs. 5.9 per cent, respectively, p=0.14) The ventral patch repair group had fewer surgical site infections at 1 month (0.9 per cent vs. 6.9 per cent, p=0.02) but higher pain levels at 1 month (p=0.02), which resolved at 1 year.
Comment: Barbed suture had similar recurrence rates in this small study, and ventral mesh was initially more uncomfortable. Potential Type II error here.
