Some 4858 patients with early stage breast cancer and clinically negative axillary nodes were studied. Omission of sentinel lymph node biopsy did not affect 5-year invasive disease-free survival: hazard rate 0.98, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.73 to 1.14, but did reduce the rate of lymphoedema.
Comment: More evidence that even sentinel lymph node biopsy is unhelpful if the axilla is not involved clinically.
