Safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of outpatient surgery for uncomplicated acute appendicitis. The PENDI-CSI Randomized Clinical Trial.

Some 128/149 (85.9 per cent) patients randomized to outpatient  surgery were discharged without admission. There were no differences in complications, readmissions or reinterventions. Outpatient care saved on average £1034 per patient, P<0.001.

Comment: Hospitals should consider an outpatient pathway for this common condition.
