Prophylactic mesh placement during formation of an end-colostomy. Long-term randomized controlled trial on effectiveness and safety.

There were 113 patients available for analysis five years after randomization. Routine mesh insertion did not reduce the risk of parastomal hernia: 27.8 versus 37.2 per cent in the no mesh group, P=0.22.

Comment: A negative study in one way, but the parastomal hernias were delayed. The possible use of mesh during colostomy formation is still a live issue.
