Some 101 patients were followed for 3 years, and the mesh group had lower incidence of imaging-confirmed parastomal hernia (mean difference -25 per cent; 95 per cent confidence interval -42.5 to -5 per cent, P=0.001). Clinically diagnosed parastomal hernia rate was also lower in the mesh group (mean difference -29 per cent, -44 to -13 per cent, P<0.001). Complication rates were similar.
Comment: Funnel-shaped prophylactic mesh reduced radiographic and clinical parastomal hernia, although the findings require validation in larger studies.
