Forty-five RCTs with 12 427 patients were include, and negative-pressure wound therapy significantly reduced surgical site infection (odds ratio 0.53, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.42 to 0.66) and shorter hospital stay (mean difference -1.67, -3.19 to -0.16 days) compared with standard dressings. Negative-pressure wound therapy did not reduce risk of organ/space infection (odds ratio 0.92, 0.67 to 1.25). Publication bias was detected, and adverse events and patient-reported outcomes were not consistently reported.
Comment: Negative-pressure wound therapy reduces surgical site infection, but its cost-effectiveness and patient-reported benefits remain uncertain.
