Some 8273 patients were included, of which 60.5 per cent underwent oncologic surgery. Patients in the tranexamic acid group received less red-cell transfusions post-operatively (relative risk 0.73, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.61 to 0.86). Venous thromboembolism rate was not different between groups (relative risk 0.96, 0.65 to 1.38).
Comment: A large-scale RCT supports hospital-wide tranexamic acid use to reduce postoperative red-cell transfusion without an apparent increase in venous thromboembolism.
