The BJS Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Malin Sund and Martyn Evans as the new Joint Editors-in-Chief of BJS, effective 1 April 2026.
Malin Sund is Professor of Surgery specialising in breast and endocrine surgery at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and Umeå University, Sweden. She joined BJS as an Editor Assistant in 2010–2011 and has served as a BJS editor since 2014. She is also Chair of the Research Council of the Swedish Cancer Society.
“I am very happy, honoured, and excited to take on this new role at BJS, and to lead the Journal together with Martyn and our fantastic editorial team,” said Malin. “We also look forward to working closely with the teams of BJS Open and BJS Academy in the coming years to further strengthen the BJS community.”
Martyn Evans is Associate Professor of Surgery, specialising in colorectal surgery based in Swansea, UK with a sub-specialist interest in advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. Martyn has been a surgical journal editor for 15 years, initially with Colorectal Disease and more recently with the BJS team for nearly a decade.  He serves as the Chair of the Lower GI Clinical Advisory Group of NATCAN and is Lead of the Wales Bowel Cancer Initiative.
“I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed as co-Editor-in-Chief with Malin,” said Martyn. “I relish the opportunity to co-lead a fantastic team in the next chapter for the Journal. We look forward to publishing the highest-quality research and articles for our readership.”
Both bring outstanding scholarly achievement, leadership, and extensive experience in surgical research and academic publishing. We are confident that under their joint stewardship, BJS will continue to advance its mission of publishing high-quality research that informs surgical practice and improves patient care globally.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Professor Des Winter for his leadership and vision as Editor-in-Chief from 2020 to 2025, which followed service as an Editor since 2006. During his tenure, the Journal achieved significant milestones and strengthened its international profile. He was instrumental in creating Young BJS and the Associate Editorial Board, which promoted engagement and strong relationships with young academic surgeons. His contributions will have a lasting impact on the Journal and the wider surgical community.
Please join us in thanking Des Winter for his service, and in welcoming Malin Sund and Martyn Evans as they begin this important role.
