Biologic versus synthetic mesh in open ventral hernia repair: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Surgery 2023: 173: 1001-1007.

The analysis included four RCTs with 632 procedures. Both surgical site infection (odds ratio 1.52, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.02 to 2.20, P=0.04) and hernia recurrence (2.75, 1.76 to 4.31, P<0.00001) were more common with biological mesh.

Comment: Is there really any role for biological mesh?
