This multicentre study included 288 patients randomized to lifestyle intervention with additional intragastric balloon therapy. After 32 weeks, mean total bodyweight loss was greater in the balloon group: 15 versus 3.3 per cent (P,0.0001). Some 17 per cent of balloons were removed for intolerance.
Comment: This is now an old technology that has never really taken off.
