Of 79 patients with 10-year follow up, mortality rate was 3.5 per cent, with all deaths occurring after distal Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The distal RYGB had greater mean BMI reduction from baseline (mean difference 2.7 kg/m2, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.0 to 4.5, P=0.002), and significantly higher rates of vitamin D deficiency (P=0.01) and diarrhoea (P=0.05). The two groups had similar quality of life scores at 10 years.
Comment: Distal RYGB resulted in greater long-term weight loss, but also with higher rates of diarrhoea and vitamin D deficiency.
