Meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials on long-term outcomes of surgical treatment of perforated diverticulitis.

Horesh N, Emile SH, Khan SM, Freund MR, Garoufalia Z, Silva-Alvarenga E et al.

Ann Surg 2023; 278: e966-e972.

Five long term RCTs included 499 patients. Compared to surgical resection, laparoscopic lavage reduced the risk of permanent stoma (odds ratio 0.133, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.278 to 0.579, P<0.001) and reoperation (0.585, 0.365 to 0.937, P=0.02), but increased the risk of recurrence (5.8, 2.33 to 14.42, P<0.001).

Comment: laparoscopic lavage has not really taken off as a widespread treatment.
