Role of preoperative in-hospital delay on appendiceal perforation while awaiting appendicectomy (PERFECT): a Nordic, pragmatic, open-label, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial.

Jalava K, Sallinen V, Lampela H, Malmi H, Steinholt I, Augestad KM et al.

Lancet 2023; 402: 1552-1561.

Some 1822 patients with uncomplicated appendicitis were randomized to appendicectomy within 8 or 24h. Eventual perforation rates were similar (8 versus 9 per cent, respectively, P=0.68), and complication rates were also similar.

Comment: Very useful pragmatic trial that helps in scheduling emergency theatres.
