Long-term outcomes of medical management vs bariatric surgery in type 2 diabetes.

Courcoulas AP, Patti ME, Hu B, Arterburn DE, Simonson DC, Gourash WF et al.

JAMA 2024; 331: 654-664.

This was a pooled analysis of four trials (262 participants). After follow-up of a median of eleven years, 25 per cent of those randomized to medical treatment had surgery. After twelve years, diabetes remission was none in the medical group, but 12.7 per cent after surgery.

Comment: Good evidence of the benefit of bariatric surgery.
