Indomethacin with or without prophylactic stent placement to prevent pancreatitis after ERCP: a randomised non-inferiority trial.

Elmunzer JB, Foster LD, Serrano J, Cote GA, Edmundowicz SA, Wani S et al, on behalf of the SVI Study Group.

Lancet 2024; 403: 450-458.

The addition of a routine stent further reduced the risk of pancreatitis by 3.6 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval 0.6 to 6.6 per cent, P=0.18 for non-inferiority) in high risk patients in this study of 1950 procedures. Safety profiles were similar.

Comment: The answer is clear but the study did not include a cost benefit analysis, and stents are expensive.
