In this study that included 134 procedures, mean pain scores at rest were similar for continuous wound perfusion compared to thoracic epidural: mean difference -0.13, 95 per cent confidence interval -0.72 to 0.47. Wound perfusion was associated with decreased opioid consumption and earlier flatus.
Comment: Similar pain relief, so either could be used, taking cost and potential complications into account.
